Picture
Early design concepts explored a singular cubic form floating over the existing heritage building. To maintain the integrity of the heritage facade it was important for the design to differentiate the old from the new.
Facing Eighth Avenue the new facade is subdued with minimal distractions. The remaining faces are playfully punctured; to let in light and connect the spaces within to the active neighbourhood.
These punctures break down the mass of the building whereby creating a filigree of varying linear shapes.

Design Response:
• Existing retail/shop-front to remain and continue to contribute to the vibrant character of Eighth Avenue.
• The two storey addition is cubic in form and a contemporary interpretation of the parapet style that is predominantly seen in the precinct.
• Generous punctures through the form breaks down the mass and opens up the building to its surroundings while maintaining a distinct architectural language.
