Orrong Road Offices
A design exercise has been consciously undertaken to address the articulation of built form for this site. The articulation of the building has been designed to provide for a dynamic composition which is sculptural in form. The design configures a number of shifting tectonic plates, as a series of cantilevered edges twisting around a fixed point.
This concept has been a primary Design Intent driver for the composition of the façade. The client proposes an LED screen on the second Floor of the development, fronting the south-east elevation. This screen element has been purpose-designed for integration into the Building.
The complex building form is a design-response that perceived height and mass of the building is broken down as a result of the shifted geometry of architecture. As such, the building is perceived ‘in the round’ and does not present large expanses of blank wall or street frontage which lack activation.
It also strengthens has the articulation of the composition of the building at higher levels, breaking up the façade into a series of discrete architectural, glazed elements or Digital Screen. These elements are purposefully bounded by metal façade panels. There is no suggestion of signage as an after-thought, as the digital screen is thus framed by the powerful architecture of the building, becoming a secondary element within the building itself.
